研究自述

社會不平等，尤其是階級不平等的起源與後果，是社會學的核心議題之一，華人社會，特別是台灣與中國近年來的階級結構變遷與貧富差距問題，是我的研究重心。其次，由於全球與台灣天災頻傳，我將研究領域延伸到氣候變遷與災難社會學，尤其關注社會不平等與受災風險、災後重建效率與貧富差距等議題。
一、華人社會的階級不平等
兩岸三地華人社會的所得分配與階級流動是我長期關注的議題。近年來，貧富差距的惡化已經成為華人社會共同的困境，逐漸引起媒體與輿論關注。我的研究發現華人社會不平等來自不同的社會轉型，首先，我與吳曉剛合作的一系列量化研究顯示，在中國社會，1949年後的社會不平等主要奠基於戶口、單位與幹部這三個政治經濟制度，尤其是計劃經濟對農民的剝削上。自1978年改革開放以來，農民處境雖有改善，單位與戶籍制度也開始鬆動，然而由農村流向城市的農民工受到歧視與剝削，資本家與國家幹部與一般民眾的權力不平衡，使得資方與勞方、以及國家幹部與一般民眾之間的所得分配不平等持續擴大。數據顯示，幹部與資本家成了中國威權資本主義發展下的贏家。此外，在富士康集團員工傳出連續自殺事件後，我與曾瑋琳、林依陵等幾位研究生對深圳台商工廠的勞動體制進行了田野調查與追蹤研究。
在台灣，階級不平等轉型的動力來自後工業化與兩岸經貿往來，導致階級投票行為的改變。我的研究發現產業升級與資本外移，使得台灣勞資雙方以及技術勞動力與非技術勞動力之間的所得差距持續擴大。與過去台灣經濟起飛時期低技術勞工因貿易而獲益的模式不同，台灣與低技術勞動力更豐沛的中國等區域貿易，使得農工階級所得水準停滯或下滑，與我對香港統計數據分析所得到的趨勢相當類似。此外，胡克威、黃善國與我合作的一系列研究顯示，兩岸自由貿易政策不僅擴大了台灣的貧富差距，並導致兩岸貿易中獲益的資方與管理階層轉向藍營，而南部的農工階級將選票投給綠營。最後，我與洪敬舒、李健鴻、王兆慶、張烽益等合著，由台灣勞工陣線出版的《崩世代：財團化、貧窮化與少子女化的危機》有幸在2012年獲得文化部所頒發的社會科學類圖書金鼎獎，藉由該書的暢銷，向台灣民眾推廣了本所有關台灣階級分化與人口變遷的研究成果。
二、全球與本土的災難社會學
近年來全球天災頻仍，個人的研究興趣轉向氣候變遷與災難社會學，探討國家能力、政治體制、社會階級與族群等因素如何導致國家層次與個人層次受災風險的差異、以及災後貧富差距惡化的情形。除了對921地震、莫拉克風災之歷史數據與跨國災難數據的收集與分析之外，個人多次前往四川地震與美國卡崔納風災、日本東北海嘯災區進行實地調查與資料收集。
首先，我整理了台灣本土的災難數據，並且發表了一系列作品。在台灣的921地震災後數據中，我與張宜君等人的研究發現個人的社會脆弱性—例如城鄉差距、農工階級與族群因素都會影響受災風險與災後的不平等；我與李宗義博士、謝志誠教授等合作的論文指出，921與中國四川512災區民間社團與社會網絡有助於改善災後的貧富差距與重建效率，然而在四川災區的田野調查發現，國家主導的重建計畫雖然相當有效率，但幹部的貪污與自利因素往往導致貧富差距的惡化，並且成為災民發動抗爭的導火線。最近，我與中研院環境變遷研究中心的林冠慧博士、國家災害防救科技中心的李香潔博士分析莫拉克災民三年來的長期追蹤資料，發現災後階級不平等有所惡化，而社會資本的韌性效應不如預期。
在跨國比較層次上，我的研究 "Governing Natural Disasters: State Capacity, Democracy, and Human Vulnerability" 刊登於 Social Forces，該文發現國家能力、政治清廉度與民主政權有利於減少天災的災情，低度發展與貧富差距則可能使災情惡化；此外，我與中研院環境變遷中心的李時雨博士合作探討全球暖化之下極端雨量對各國嬰兒死亡率與災難死亡率的影響，是證明全球暖化導致人類傷亡的最新研究成果。我們另一篇研究顯示，氣候變遷的衝擊可能會導致公民社會的動員，間接威脅威權主義國家的政權存續。藉著擴大跨國數據的來源，未來我將進一步探討人類世（anthropocene）的社會變遷與自然世界互動的議題。
