研究自述
本人2004年加入中研院社會學所前以歷史比較方法探討新加坡及香港兩個華人社會在二次大戰後的教育政策。理論架構主要來自新馬克思主義的「霸權」(hegemony)及「國家權力形構」(state formation)的概念,資料來源包括官方機密檔案及報章等原始資料。本人希望通過非西方社會歷史經驗與西方新馬克思主義進行對話,最終把「霸權」及「國家權力形構」理論去西方中心化,促成理論的進一步發展。本人研究的主要成果包括以下幾方面:(1)通過比較新加坡(一個多元族群社會)及香港(一個單一族群的華人社會),本人發現族群因素是影響國家霸權策略(hegemonic-strategies)的重要因素。此一發現促使本人把族群變項引入霸權理論,糾正過往西方新馬克思主義國家理論只偏重討論階級的不足。(2)本人的比較研究論證不同的社會在社會運動及國家結構(state structure)會導致迥異的國家權力形構企劃(projects),並引入該二項因素建構能解釋跨社會(cross-societal)差異的霸權理論。(3)西方學者一般根據十七、十八世紀西方的歷史經驗討論國家及教育的關係,當時西方各國因建國(nation building)的需要建立現代學校制度。西方的特殊歷史經驗使大部份學者都把學校教育單純地視為受國家權力影響的依變項。然而,本人研究二十世紀中後期的兩個亞洲社會,發現當時新加坡及香港既存(pre-existed)的教育體制往往與執政當局相衝突,影響國家權力形構。此一發現促使本人把國家及學校教育的關係重構(reformulated)成互動(interactive)及相互影響(reciprocal)的。
2004年加入中研院後本人延續過往的比較研究,並納入台灣的分析個案。本人在目前進行兩個相關研究計畫,一個是比較新加坡及台灣學校教育的去中國化(de-sinicization)及本地化(localization);另一是比較新、港、台三地私立學校的歷史發展。因為過往幾乎從沒有學者以歷史社會學方法探討台灣教育,本人必須發掘大量一手資料。在過去數年本人翻查舊報紙資料,又到內政部、教育部、教育部中部辦公室(過往台灣省政府教育廳的所在地)及中興新村等地查閱官方檔案。台灣與新加坡及香港都是以華人為大多數的華人社會,然而它們在族群政治、社會運動、及地緣政治等方面都存在重要的差異。本人相信台灣與新、港兩地的比較研究有助了解台灣社會的特性,提供了解台灣教育發展的另類視野。
